Abstract

Märkli's 'Visitor Centre', unmistakeable thanks to Jenny Holzer's large contribution, is the second building to be finished in the Campus. The project embraces contemporary forms while exposing the inherent qualities of materials, such as yew and olive wood, aluminium and marble which have been utilized. Here a thorough survey of the building is provided through sketches, plans, photographs and text.

Abstract

A celebration of Märkli's years as chair of the Architecture Department, this book offers more than one hundred student projects created during his professorship, a selection of teaching documents, and a conversation with Märkli that further illuminates his interests and views. The void and limits have always been central themes in Peter Märkli’s teaching as professor for architecture and construction at ETH Zurich. The design tasks he has developed encourage students to formulate a notion of life depicted in architectural structures.Peter Märkli is one of the most important Swiss archites working otday. As professor of architecture and construction at ETH Zurch, he has always made the concepts of the void and the limit central to his teaching: for him, athe articulation of the void, the external space, plays a role that is as essentatil as the expression of the facade, a limit separating inside from outside.
